This project involved the design of a series of cultural icons and a subsequent exhibition. The goal was to honor historical dance legends but highlight them in a contemporary way to refresh their image and maintain poignancy.
To emulate a contemporary, pop art/street art mood, bright colors and shapes were added to older photography. Drawing from my brand research, I experimented with layering, line work, and patterns to help create this mood. Typeface choices were geometric to help reinforce these treatments.
The final exhibition elements balanced the organic nature of the linework and bright colors with geometric grids and a black, neutral background. Exhibition banners, a brochure, projections, and wayfinding elements were created with these concepts in mind.
These images are part of the process work, experimenting with layering, pattern, and line.
The following are lamp post banners advertising the exhibition.
The animations below would be projected onto large exhibition walls, illustrating the essence of each icon.
